From becoming tech-first to adapting new teaching methods, education in India is undergoing a huge metamorphosis. The Pandemic has a lot to contribute in terms of technology as it forced schools to switch to a completely digital platform to continue providing quality education to the many numbers of students who finished almost 2 years of schooling at home. However, the pandemic was just the catalyst, because we have been seeing tremendous digitization in all aspects of schooling in the last couple of years- like gamification of the curriculum, using multimedia, and reducing dependence on textbooks. Here’s why education in India is going through a rapid change -

  1. Tech-Friendly Schools - Before, a typical day at school meant a bag full of books and pencils and rough sheets entrenching the culture of a unidirectional approach to imparting education. However, these last few years see a fresh change from this approach. To deepen interest in STEM subjects, schools are invariably using all resources on hand, like presentations, slides, gamification, and videos. Higher education in India tackles advanced concepts in physics, biology, and math both by high tech in-class training and also makes these lectures available after class online, which is really helpful for students if they ever want to go back and revise some concepts.

  2. Flexible Teaching Methods - We are seeing a radical change in the nature of instruction when it comes to education in India. For eons, schools have been adopting the same general structure for all students not taking into account the different learning levels of the students. What we are seeing in the past couple of years is an acknowledgment of a student’s varying capacities and adjusting teaching and instruction to match the student’s level. This is highly facilitated by the tech-led movement, where students can use games, apps, and online training modules which are set at certain levels to help with the unique learning process of each student.

  3. Application Based Learning - One aspect of learning that is very important is an application especially when it comes to pre-primary education and primary education in India where key foundational concepts are taught to children. Instead of adopting the text book and recall method, schools in India are rapidly including more play learning methods, videos, games, and projects to help facilitate the learning of key concepts. Speaking of the higher education system in India, take MUNS and Parliamentary Debates for example where students extrapolate on key issues of government and social sciences in a simulated environment instead of mugging up social facts when it comes to their social sciences curriculum.

  4. Impact of Globalisation - Education is adapting to the changes that are happening in the broader social context, which is globalization. As tech and the age of information truly revolutionize community and connectivity all around the world, we are seeing education help prepare their students to cope better with the world as a global village. This includes sensitizing students to various cultures, as we see primary education in India handling diversity and multicultural identities through their curriculum. Higher education in India is adopting global standards of testing to help prepare students in case they want to go abroad for studies. Preparing students for the onslaught of global culture is really important and is truly changing the face of education in India.

  5. Importance of Mental Health - Education in India known for its high-pressure environment and high-performance expectancies is slowly acknowledging the importance of mental health and the conversations around them. The role of school counselors and school psychologists is becoming more prolific when it comes to promoting the overall health of students. Mental health-promoting seminars, workshops to help reduce anxiety- all this really helps de-stigmatize the conversation of mental health and really helps students, especially high school and primary students who grapple with big changes in their lives, both emotionally and mentally.
